I think I got the gadget gene from my father, who has more electronic doodads than any man I know. So when time.com released its list of “25 Gotta Have Travel Gadgets” I had to have a look to see what to put on Dad’s (or my) wish list. Out of the 25, I’ve narrowed it down to four fabulous and reasonably priced gadgets.
#1: Asus R300 Handheld Personal Navigator: I just bought a Garmin Nuvi a few weeks ago and am very happy with it so far, but if I had known about this system, I may have purchased it instead. It can mount in your car like a traditional GPS, but it’s small enough to fit in a clutch purse and has maps for walking and biking – great if you live in a city like I do.
#2: Wine Skin: If I hadn’t just purchased Ms. Wandering Albatross’s birthday gift, I’d totally get her this condom-like wine bottle protector. She lost a very nice bottle of white when it shattered in her suitcase during her trip home from New Zealand, and this may have saved both the bottle and her luggage. With the Wine Skin, if the bottle breaks the liquid remains inside the wrapper, and because it’s like bubble wrap, the chances the bottle will break are a lot lower.
#3: Reef Stash Sandals: La Voyageuse and I are huge fans of shoes, and normally choose fashion over function. These flip-flops wouldn’t make Jimmy Choo enthusiasts sing for joy, but they certainly are practical. No need to worry about leaving your credit card or keys in your beach tote while you stroll along the sand – your valuables slide right inside the sandals.
#4: Swissbit Swiss Army 1GB USB Flash Drive: If the t.v. powers-that-be put “MacGyver” back on the air, Richard Dean Anderson would totally have one of these. With a flashlight, USB drive, and standard Swiss Army knife tools like a nail file, scissors, and screwdriver, all it’s missing is a roll of duct tape and you’ll be able to get yourself out of almost any sticky situation. This one’s definitely on the list for Dad.
Are there other travel gadgets that you think are great? Let us know!

Wow, you know I’m not a big shoe person but those reef sandels look great!!! And I have to say that I wish I had owned that bottle protector when we were in NZ; my luggage is still slightly sticky, yuck!
