I’m so excited! I made my first Craigslist purchase this weekend – an antique Martha Washington sewing table for $50! It will be the home of my new sewing machine and will live in a corner of our small guest room.
The lighting in the room was particularly bad last night, but as you can see it’s dark brown against a dark brown wall (Behr’s Chocolate Cupcake). That’s not gonna work. Plus, there’s some water damage to the top, so it’s in desperate need of refinishing.
This style of sewing table is great for a small space not only because it’s petite, but it also has great storage. Both ends are hinged and lift up to reveal deep wells perfect for stashing fabric remnants. Of the three roomy drawers, one has a removable divided tray for storing needles, bobbins, and other small accessories.
Now some decisions must be made: exterior paint, interior accent paint, and hardware. My initial thought is to spray paint it a nice creamy white (the duvet and curtains in the room are off-white), and the interior a celery green or light aqua. I’m leaning towards aqua simply because I’ve been dying to paint something that color. I’ve also been looking for a good excuse to buy hardware from Anthropologie, but the prices are putting me off. I may need to mix and match with some from HD. Here are a few from Anthro that have caught my eye and would work well with other colors in the room:
Hopefully I’ll have time to work on it this weekend and post the “after” pics.

My parents have that very same table! Like exactly! Seeing your post kind of makes me want to ask for it…!
Since your trim is all white, what about painting the outside the celery green, and aqua inside? Best of luck!
I love the second knob – it is awesome. I just bought a Kenmore sewing machine two weeks ago and I LOVE it. I’ve just starting sewing and I really enjoy it. I can’t wait to see the after photo of your new sewing table!
very cute, what a great little find!
It’s beautiful! And the bubbled glass knob is so yummy!
Ooh — can’t wait to see the finished product! I love that you’re going to paint the interior a different, fun color and those knobs are gorgeous!
My grandmother had one of these. I remember playing with all the buttons and bobbin. I wonder what happened to it So pretty and useful.
I’m really excited to to see the newest design of the sewing machine you created , I cant wait to see it ^^
