Mail Call: West Elm’s December Catalog

It’s kind of silly that I don’t own anything from West Elm yet, because I admire a lot of their products. Perhaps it’s just my mental block against owning anything modern – it’s not that I don’t want to, it’s that I’m not sure how to incorporate it into my house. I’m quite capable of envisioning how it would look in someone else’s house, mind you. Maybe that will be a New Year’s resolution for 2010: buy something modern and make it work. Or at the very least, be ok with it not exactly working, but not looking horrible, either.

Here are my picks from the catalog that arrived in my mailbox last week.

This butler tray and stand is so sleek and a cheaper, space-saving alternative to a full bar.

Butler Tray & Stand, $149

Speaking of trays, this set of hammered ones is not your grandma’s silver! Sparkly and practical, these would make a statement on your Thanksgiving table.

Hammered Trays, $12-$59

This snow bunny is a cute yet modern take on the usually tacky snow globe:

Snow Globe, $29

I really, really love this mirrored table lamp. I think it would look great in the version of my living room that’s currently only living in my head:

West Elm foxed mirror table lamp

Foxed Mirror Table Lamp, $199

Elephants, bunnies, and birds made of cast metal can stand on their own or be used as bookends (awfully cute in a child’s room although they could be used as blunt weapons in sibling toy wars).

Cast Metal Animals, $26

Hope you all had a good weekend!

  1. I did buy my duvet cover from West Elm, but that is the only thing I’ve ever purchased from their catalog. West Elm sells a lot of items with very clean lines that look out of place in some homes.

I’ve been coveting the peacock snow globe!

And you should definitely bring in a bit of modern — there’s nothing I like better than the juxtaposition of modern with traditional! I think you’ll be surprised at how easily you can work some West Elm into your decor.
