Pretty in Pink: A Girl’s Nursery Design

It will be a few more weeks before we can find out our baby’s gender, if he or she cooperates with the ultrasound tech. I’ve always known that I would not be able to wait forty weeks to find out if my child is a he or a she, but Mr. JC is more traditional and took some convincing. The winning argument (combined with some whining on my part and major flexibility on his): “Babe, we’re going to find out the gender eventually. We’ll be in suspense for 18 weeks or 40 weeks, but either way we’re going to find out, and I don’t want to wait 40 weeks”.

While I can appreciate why many people want to hear the doc yell “It’s a __!” above the screaming of the newborn, I know that finding out in advance will help me to bond better with the baby. I’d like to know whether it’s my son or my daughter kicking me in the gut, and who I’m talking to when I start randomly babbling to my stomach while walking the grocery store aisles. Oh, and I don’t want a gender neutral nursery!

Eventually, I would love both a boy and a girl, but freely admit that thinking about little girl decor has been so much easier. Regardless of gender, the nursery walls will likely be painted yellow and have white furniture. The room is a good size, but has only one window and yellow would brighten it up. It’s also the only room in our house with pure white trim, and therefore the only good candidate for yellow paint. Here are two paint options under consideration so far:

Ben Moore Corinthian White via myperfectcolor.com

I love the combination of raspberry pink and yellow. To me, it’s both feminine and modern, and I hope my little girly girl is going to be both of those things! This mood board was inspired by the Pottery Barn Kids bedding, which my bestie pointed out to me long before I got knocked up. It features little birds that will pop up throughout the room, without being too theme-y. If we find out we’re having a girl, it’s highly likely that I will stop at Pottery Barn on my way home from work that day to buy this bedding!

  2. Petite chandelier, Wal-Mart
  3. Bedding, Pottery Barn Kids
  4. Fabric for roman shade, Lewis & Sheron Textile Company
  5. Rug, Dash & Albert
  6. Rocking chair, Pottery Barn Kids
  7. Alphabet print (with little birds), Bold & Noble
  8. A few of our wedding photos in black & white, Shutterfly
  9. Personalized print, Chichiboulie

Here are two other items that wouldn’t fit on the mood board, but would be cute in this room:

Paper bird mobile, Etsy seller khamm75

Wall stickers, wallstickershop.com

Oh, this is so much fun! I’ll probably come up with another girl’s nursery option before the ultrasound. Tomorrow, it’s the boy’s nursery!

Jenn, you know me too well! I love all those Etsy choices, especially the paper map butterflies and the YumiYumi bird prints. Is it bad that I really hope there’s a girl in there? I feel like that may make me a bad mom already. :) If not, at least I’ll have a few more months to search for cute boy things. Maybe J. can tell me what he likes!

OMG! I can’t believe that I missed your huge announcement! Congratulations. It is such a special and exciting time.

I had a neutral nursery because I didn’t find out the sex of either of my children. Had I known the second child was going to be a girl, I would totally have loved a nursery like the one you planned.

You must be on pins and needles waiting these next few weeks to find out the sex of your little guy or girl. Hope you are feeling well and getting plenty of rest.

My girlfriend used that PBK bedding in her little girl’s nursery. It is so precious! Do you have a feeling? I totally felt like it was a boy practically the moment I found out I was preggers. And of course I could only come up with little girl nursery ideas. Ah ha. I eventually settled on a whale theme with aqua and avocado colors.

WOW — I love it! It’s exactly the kind of room that I’d come up with (and you should seriously check out the girl’s nursery design I did last summer — it’s the same color scheme!):

Hawthorne Yellow is a classic — you can’t go wrong. Also love the Annie Selke fabric and the Bold & Noble print.
