Like so many of you, I love HomeGoods. There’s nothing better than paying a fraction of the price for great home decor, and my credit card has gotten a workout there since we bought our home back in September 2008. This weekend, HomeGoods came to the rescue yet again.
In a recent post I mentioned my desire for a new living room rug. Our existing rug was left over from our old apartment, and was too small and boring for our new house. Made of jute and chenille, it became a 5′x7′ scratching pad for our cat, and showed every single kitty hair that collected on it.
Since we moved in, I’ve had my eye out for a new, larger rug. I waffled between something modern and something traditional. Ultimately, my love for Persian rugs won out, and I started drooling over this number from Ballard Designs:
However, I was NOT in love with the price tag – $999 for 8′x10′. With other home improvements on the docket, including a nursery, spending $1k on a rug wasn’t an option.
On clearance for a mere $275 at my local HomeGoods was the rug I’d been looking for. Pardon this awful photo from my phone, but by the time I got the rug home and set up, night had already fallen.
Why this rug works for me:
- The golden tan background complements the hues in the red oak floors and the slightly shimmery curtains.
- The larger size actually makes the room seem larger.
- Touches of sage green, spa blue, deep brown, and even red pull in all the colors of the room.
- Now you can actually tell there’s a coffee table in the room!
- The plush wool pile is softer on the feet (and will be softer on the baby) than its predecessor.
- The ethnic print contributes substantially to the global-chic look I’d like to ultimately achieve.
Isn’t it amazing how floor coverings have the power to totally transform a room? Although there’s still more work to be done, our living room feels much more put together with this beautiful bargain on the floor.
P.S.: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!

It’s perfect for you room Laura. It really does have the feel of the Ballard rug-but not the price. I’m picturing baby JC crawling on it!
I love Home Good too. I wish there was a store a little closer to my house. The nearest is almost an hour away.
Wow, that’s a great score — it looks almost identical to the BD one! I can’t believe the price and you’re right, the bigger rug really does make the room look bigger.
PS – I am failing miserably at my self-imposed blogging sabbatical.
The new rug looks fantastic!!
The new rug looks great, Laura! Good for you on holding out for a bargain version. It looks so similar! I heart Home Goods, too.
looks great, what a nice upgrade for your future baby to play on
Home Goods to the rescue indeed!
LOVE it. You are responsible or me HAVING to go to Home Goods this weekend! ah ha ha
Oooh I love your garden stool — I didn’t really notice it when you initially posted, but now I’m looking for them everywhere.
