The nursery is slowly coming together, and with hardly any time left (maybe none, since I suppose Junior could come any time now) we’re kicking it into high gear to finish as much as possible.
The rocking chair from Boston Interiors that we ordered in Sunbrella fabric arrived this weekend. A certain someone has confirmed that it’s a comfortable addition to our home:
The quilt was handmade by a relative, and the teddy bear is my most prized (non-living) possession.
Pinky the bear was a gift from my cousin for my fourth birthday. She got her name from the pink gingham shirt and ribbon she came in. In the massive collection of teddy bears from my childhood, Pinky was neither the softest nor the squishiest. Yet for some reason, she became my absolute favorite and constant companion. I honestly think that I would be more upset if I lost that bear than if I lost my wedding ring. But now it’s time for another little person to love her.
Across the room from the new chair, we have our new window treatment. When my mom told her friends she was making me a roman shade, they kind of laughed at her and said “Well, if you can sew that, you can sew pretty much anything.” My mom is no novice when it comes to window treatments; she’s made eight for my house, and loads of pinch-pleat drapes and valances for her own house. This roman shade was a first, and proved to be quite a challenge – hence why Calico Corners wanted to charge me nearly $700 for it.
I purchased the navy canvas fabric from Calico Corners on sale. The lining, thread, and most of the supplies came from my local JoAnn store, while the cord lock was ordered from Drapery Sewing Supplies. JoAnn sells a roman shade kit for about $20 that includes most of the supplies you’d need, which I would have purchased had the window not been too large.
According to my mom, the most difficult part of the shade was the fact that it has a double lining for insulation and extra darkness. I’m not even going to attempt to provide instructions here, but she followed these steps from Martha Stewart and used my Sewing 101 book as additional reference since it has much better pictures of each step.
This past weekend was filled with more nursery projects: spray painting frames, making alphabet cards (for which I’ll provide instructions), and staining the changing pad holder that my dad made. Hopefully we’ll get everything finished in time!

Your mother did a fabulous job on the shade!!! It looks professionally done. Love the color and the trim.
I also love the chair from Boston Interiors. It’s gorgeous, and the Sunbrella fabric should keep it looking good as new for a long time to come!
So cute – and that teddy is adorable! And I’m so impressed with your moms sewing skills – gorgeous shade!! I was all concerned with getting our nurseries completed before the babies came too…but you know what – they don’t even sleep in them for the first few months normally! It’s way more convenient to have them sleep in your room for the night time feedings!
Love the room and your teddy. I still remember the day that James decided “my Bethy” needed to sleep with him, awesome feeling to know your favorite toy is a favorite of your kids too!!
Love the chair and shade — navy is such a classic choice and between the dark color and weather-resistance, it should hold up to Junior.
Sadly, this week I’ve learned that the fabric is like Velcro with cat hair! Between Whiskey’s love for both the rug in that room AND the new chair, I should really vacuum on a daily basis. Oh well – with this much fur around, it’s highly unlikely that Junior will be born with pet allergies!
Loooooove the shade. And I think that chair now belongs to the fur baby. HA!

You did a nice job on the window treatments. Everything looks great.

You are so lucky to have such a talented mom! Roman shades are such a classic and you’ll never need to switch these out.
Hey! I just found your blog and love reading about your nursery. I am expecting a little one as well so seeing other people’s ideas for their nursery is really inspiring. I love the roman shade!
