DIY Days of the Week Clothes Rack

When I go back to work after maternity leave, Mr. JC will likely be in charge of dropping Junior off at daycare. This will make the morning a bit less traumatic for me (although I’ll probably cry when I’m leaving the house instead of crying when leaving him at daycare), but busier for Mr. JC, who is used to rolling out of bed, into the shower, and out the door in about 25 minutes.

Since I want to help Mr. JC leave the house on time, make sure Junior wears all of his cute outfits, and teach the munchkin how to count, I made a weekday clothes rack for the nursery. Ok, fine – I came up with the concept but my dad surprised me by making the actual rack.

Materials:

  • Wooden craft numbers (1 through 5)
  • Craft paint
  • Scrapbook paper
  • X-acto knife
  • Mod Podge or other craft glue
  • Small foam paint brush
  • Peg rack (make your own or buy an unfinished one like this)
  • Primer
  • Paint
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Level
  • Removable poster tape/stickies

Step 1: Lay the numbers upside down on a sheet of wax paper. Using craft paint that coordinates with the scrapbook paper, paint the backside and edges of the numbers. When dry, the numbers will easily peel right off the wax paper.

Step 2: Using a foam brush, spread Mod Podge or craft glue in a thin layer on the front side of the numbers. Lay the numbers upside down on the back side of your scrapbook paper and allow to dry.

Step 3: Use the X-acto knife to cut the excess paper away from the numbers.

Step 4: Prime and paint your peg rack. I intended to buy one, but after describing my plans to my dad, he whipped one up for me overnight using scraps from his workshop. What a guy! Mr. JC painted the rack in the same color as the nursery bookcase (Behr’s Neptune Blue).

Step 5: Use the level, drill, and screws to securely mount the peg rack to the wall.

Step 6: Mount the numbers above the pegs using the poster tape. Since the numbers I used are quite light, removable posters stickies by Scotch are strong enough to hold them to the wall, and can be easily removed once the munchkin becomes a mathematician. :)

Step 7: On Sunday night, check the weather forecast and hang up the kiddo’s Monday through Friday outfits. Voila! No more guesswork for you or your spouse!

Yes, that's a "Twilight" onesie on the left. Thanks, MK! :)

Question: Do you lay out your own outfits the night before, or do you pull something together in the morning? It’s always my goal to do it the night before, but that rarely happens! I hope this peg rack is inspiration to at least do it for Junior. Maybe I should make a grown-up version for myself!

I LOVE this idea.. I’m laughing when I think about what getting D dressed in the morning is like in our house. I’m lucky if she’s in real clothes by noon. And if I leave Matt to figure out the outfits, let’s just say it’s very clear that her father dressed her.

What a great idea! Even if it’s not used one week, the numbers make it so cute just as a decoration! I should add that you are much more organized than me!

Such a cute idea!! My mom used to do this when I was little because she said when I got to the age where I could pick out my own clothes it was always a BIG mess. So she would lay out 5 outfits for me on Sunday (matching bows and all) and I was allowed to pick out what day I wanted to wear each outfit but I was not allowed to change them. It actually worked really well, I stopped giving her a hard time about getting dressed and she could have a stress free morning.

Love your rack (clothes rack that is, I didnt want you to think I was being fresh haha)

@Linds: What a great strategy your mom had! And actually, my rack is better than it’s been in years. ;-)

LOL, you have the best dads! (yours and Juniors) I love all the little touches you have added to his room to make it personalized! When it comes to Annelise I have the whole outfit hung together and then I just take the first one on the left and when I wash them I hang them back on the right, this ensures that she wears them all. But with James he now likes to pick his own outfit so we do it in the morning if we have time, otherwise I just grab him something. (I used to do the outfit method with him too)

SUCH a great idea Laura. I think I need to supersize that for my own closet — it’d sure save me time in the morning! ;)

Awesome! And that Twilight onesie is so hilarious!

This is adorable and practical! And, yes, I think I might need one of these for my closet, too! I am horrible about planning my outfits.

You are so clever to come up with this idea-and to know in advance that Daddies aren’t always the best at putting together outfits. My husband once took our 18 month old son out in a pair of neon swim trunks, water shoes and a gray Harvard t-shirt.

Love the Twilight shirt, that’s hilarious.
