Dress Shopping: An Epic FAIL

A note to preggos and new moms: DO NOT GO DRESS SHOPPING THREE WEEKS POST PARTUM! Don’t do it!

My friend A., who has been one of my gals since we were in first grade, is getting married this weekend. To sound like a total cliche, I have nothing to wear! Seriously. Many of my pre-pregnancy tops fit, but my bottoms do not and most maternity clothes are (fortunately) too big. Awkward!

On Wednesday the kiddo and I had a lunch and shopping date with a close (and very honest) friend of mine and her munchkin. The good news: Junior was a peach during his first trip to the mall and Cheesecake Factory. The bad news: LOFT, where I can always find something, turned up nothing but frustration. So many cute things. So many cute things that did not fit, or  kind of fit but looked ridiculous. I’m normally an hourglass figure, but since the boobs aren’t being used for food, they’ve shrunk back to their modest size and left me with a pear shape that I don’t know how to dress.

I should note that overall I’m pretty pleased with how I look three weeks after having a baby. I estimate that I’ve lost all of the 33-ish pounds I gained except for the last annoying ten. I don’t own a scale, and went to Bed Bath and Beyond this weekend to buy one – just for shits and giggles. Upon seeing the $40 price tag, I thought to myself Why spend $40 on something that will piss me off? So no scale for me. Only a closet and mall full of dresses that don’t fit, and a big question mark as to what I will wear to A’s pre-party on Saturday night and her nuptials on Sunday. Thank goodness the whole thing is casual.

Enough blathering. If my body (and my willingness to spend money on clothes that are two sizes bigger than normal) were different, here’s what I would want to wear.

J. Crew, $148

Banana Republic, $130

LOFT, $128

Ann Taylor, $168

Meh. I’ll come up with something. One thing is for sure: I will not go nekkid to A’s wedding.

  1. Going naked is usually frowned upon at most weddings. LOL! One thing I know for sure is that you likely hate the idea of wearing a maternity dress. Do you have anything with an empire waist that might work?

  2. Oh, that sounds horrible! I feel like the Loft is often hit or miss. Have you tried a department store? Lord and Taylor and Nordstroms at the Natick mall may have some stuff… Good luck and have fun! Let us know what you pull together.

  3. I can’t imagine how frustrating dress shopping postpartum must be — but you’re a brave girl to even try it! Honestly though, I’m sure you’ll be back in most of your clothes in just a few more weeks.
