Cheap Chic: State & City Map Art

You all know the phrase “love where you live”, and most of us who write about home decor and diy projects use this phrase to refer to our (or your) homes. How about the city that you live in, or the state?

I was born and raised in the same house that my parents still live in, in a suburb of Boston. Although I left for college (a whopping 90 minutes away in Connecticut), I couldn’t wait to get back to my home state. My husband is from California and moved east for a job (the very job that introduced us). He’s a much more adventurous sort; despite all the traveling I’ve done, I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Why do I love Massachusetts, and the fair city of Boston?

  • Piping hot clam chowder (or rather, chowdah)
  • Lobster rolls served in split-top hotdog buns (lightly toasted with butter, please)
  • Houses from the 1600′s that are still standing, and happily occupied by young families
  • Cobblestone sidewalks, even though they will rip up a new pair of high heels in seconds
  • All of the history: from the pilgrims to Paul Revere, from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Whitey Bulger
  • The lack of street signs (simply because it drives my husband bananas)
  • Our fierce loyalty to sports teams whether they win or lose
  • Apple-picking in the fall (can’t wait to take Jr. this year)
  • I can say “wicked” (as in “I got a wicked great deal at HomeGoods today!”) and no one will bat an eye. Except my husband, who always calls me on it.

If you love your hometown, or the place that you’ve embraced as your own, why not show everyone how proud you are by displaying some fun map art? These artists all have prints available for a variety of states and cities (and in some cases, countries, too).

Ooh, I love this post. And I love Boston, too! I love Austin because…everyone is relaxed and smiles. You can wear flip flops most of the year, pretty much anywhere. It’s where I fell in love with my husband. And it’s where I was introduced to chili con queso. ;) Have a great weekend!

I’m from Missouri and while I don’t always love my state I do love the St. Charles riverfront along the Missouri River. It’s where Louis & Clark took off from, it’s where my ancestors lived and worked after immigrating and it’s where I worked my first post-college job with my now husband.

In fact, I bought some art recently to honor that, the Missouri art by Poppy and Pinecone. The quality is gorgeous and I’m really in love with it.

I loved this post!! When I was in high school, I could imagine nothing better than getting as far away from Kansas (where I was born and raised) as possible. But now I’ve grown to love my state! And I think I need some artwork to celebrate it!

Great post. I am feeling slightly sick though… I bought my brother a Sydney version of #2 last year and it cost me $150. Bugger!
