This past Saturday, I met a blogging rock star. Holly Becker, of the über-popular decor8 blog came to Boston to sign copies of her gorgeous new book, Decorate.
I attempted to not make a world-class blubbering fool of myself when I handed my book to her to sign, but I failed. Thankfully, Holly was gracious about it.
When I took Holly’s “Blogging Your Way” class, which she co-teaches with Leslie of A Creative Mint, I learned a great deal about blogging – but also about how generous people can be. Holly is exceptionally generous with her knowledge as well as her time. After the book signing, she joined about twenty of us from the New England blogging community for lunch. She didn’t have to. We planned to get together, anyway, and she could have spent her lunch break with friends and family. Instead she invested her time with her fans and supporters. Holly is one classy lady, that’s for sure.
In addition to Holly, I had the chance to chat and swap business cards with several other interesting, friendly women. One used to work for Domino (R.I.P) and is restoring a 300 year old house, another is a software developer by day and jewelry designer by night. One is a professional interior designer who also created and runs an online magazine. Another is an artist and published author. Some were textile designers, another a landscape architect. And a few of us fell into the hodge-podge category of “lifestyle blogger.”
Let me tell you, I was so nervous about this blogger meet-up. I’m not good with cocktail-party mingling situations, because I always presume myself to be the underdog – the one who doesn’t know anyone, the one less talented, less stylish, less popular.
I have a serious blogging inferiority complex. And I need to get over it already. I’m so glad that I got over it enough to attend these two events. Finally, I put Holly’s teachings about overcoming blogging fears into action.
Thanks to these great ladies, in addition to Holly, for such a great afternoon!

Ah, that is so fun! I am very jealous of you opportunity to meet Holly and meet up with other bloggers! And you should definitely not have an inferiority complex when it comes to blogging…you are such a pro!
It’s so awesome that you stepped out of your comfort zone and met other bloggers! Good job, lady. I felt the same way about going to BBCBOS. Just keep telling yourself, “I’m awesome and I deserve to be here.”
Super duper jeal. You rock, though! Remember never to undersell yourself. Hugs from bloggy land.
Hey Laura, I’m surprised to hear about your feelings of “less stylish” and so on…as you have a great blog. Again, sorry we didn’t get a chance to chat and swap cards, but I’d love it if you could add my name to your list
thanks!
Desha, consider yourself added! And I guess there’s always someone out there who’s bigger and better. There are a million blogs out there and sometimes it’s easy to feel (and actually be) lost in the shuffle. But I value the readership that I have and the fun I have writing, and ultimately that’s what matters!
Yea, I think it’s about putting the energy out there and then seeing how things evolve. If we don’t try, we simply won’t know, right? As long as it’s fun, I say keep doing what your doing!
What a fabulous opportunity! I’m green with envy!
Wish she was coming to Canada…boo hoo. I love what Eve said above about being awesome and deserving to be there! Yes, you are!!! <3
Hey Laura, your blog is great, you really have no reason to have a blogging inferiority complex. As long as you continue you’re inferiority complex will disappear by itself, as you get more competent and confident in blogging.
Hi Laura, what a nice post about the event! I was sitting at the far end of the table and I was feeling like such an “underdog” I didn’t make my way around to introduce myself to anyone that wasn’t sitting right near me. I’m sorry I didn’t mingle more and meet you, but I am now going to check out your blog, which looks quite stylish!
Hope to see you at another meet up.
I’ve heard such great things about this book, and I’m clueless when it comes to decorating. I think I probably need to read it! That sounds like a fun night too–I love meeting other bloggers!
Sounds like a fun afternoon. I’m looking forward to visiting the blogs of these ladies.
Hi Laura! I really enjoyed meeting you at the decor8 luncheon! It was lots of fun chatting about blogging and life in general ; ) You come across to me as the perfect cocktail party attendee because you can speak enthusiastically about such a variety of topics. Glad I was sitting next to you and I look forward to seeing you at future Boston blogger events!
Thanks, Yvonne! That’s very sweet of you. I hope we’ll meet up at another blogger event soon!
That’s uber cool! Gosh I miss Domino!
