Two Lights Are Better Than One

Sea Gull Lighting Pemberton Vanity Light

Our half-bath (aka powder room) went through a major transformation in 2010, going from a bland, builder-basic box to a rich blue ode to the ocean. It was one of many crazy-good ideas I had when I was pregnant (see below - I am not just weirdly fat). First we made some repairs, painted, and replaced the hardware and faucet. Then we made a valance for the window, and finally trimmed the mirror and hung art on the walls. All of these changes were wonderful and made this tiny room one of my … [Read more...]

I'm not yet over ikat, are you? If we were in the market for a new shower curtain, I'd pick one of these ikat options from World Market. Both are just $29.99 and would add chic global flair to a basic bath. purple ikat shower curtain blue ikat shower curtain … [Read more...]

Loos for the Littlest Ones

beachy kids bathroom

It took a few months, but my 18 month old finally loves baths. He now yells "Bath!" in the evening when his internal clock tells him it's tubby time, and he scampers up the stairs to the bathroom that the two of us share. Yes, I relinquished the en-suite master bathroom to Mr. JC a long time ago, despite its ample size and double vanity. A girl's gotta have her own space, sometimes! Yet now a little boy has taken over my ladies room and he (and all his stuff) has to be accommodated. Right … [Read more...]

Tiny Tiles Everywhere

tiny tiles on wall and floor

The latest Pottery Barn Bed & Bath catalog arrived in my mailbox this week, full of fabulous pieces that tempt me and make my wallet groan. Don't worry wallet - your money will remain intact. For now. One particular bathroom featured in the catalog caught my eye because of an unusual feature: tiny tiles on both the wall and the floor, separated by a baseboard. I've seen plenty of bathrooms with large tiles on the floor and tiny tiles on the wall tiny tiles on the floor, and … [Read more...]

Cheap Chic: Chinoiserie in the Shower

chinoiserie in the shower

The bathroom is an easy place to make quick, inexpensive updates. I spotted a great chinois shower curtain at World Market's online shop (oh how I wish they had a store was in Massachusetts!) and in a few minutes found a few things that would perk up a ho-hum bath. The shower curtain has a band along the edge in black, green, and turquoise, which makes the shower curtain a bit modern. The bench, from JC Penney, is on sale, and you could spray paint it and reupholster the seat easily. Check out … [Read more...]

Half-bath Makeover Part 2: Treating the Window

valance with ribbon pick-ups

Now that our half-bath is no longer a beige box, it's time to dress up the window with something a little fancier than simply mini-blinds, which are necessary for privacy. The catch: the fabric must coordinate with the valances in our dining room, because the bathroom window is clearly visible from the dining room. The dining room valances are a pretty paisley print with green, brown, blue, and cream: In this "before" photo, you can see how the bathroom is awkwardly placed right off the … [Read more...]

Tank Tops

A trip to HomeGoods last week didn't yield the bookcase decor I hoped for, but I did walk out with a few things. I can't very well leave there empty-handed, can I? The two practical little gems I purchased are toilet decor. Yup. The toilet tank is an often under-dressed household feature. Don't worry, I'm not suggesting you dress it in something like this: Eek. What I am suggesting is a little tank topper to corral the bathroom necessities you already stash there, like tissues, an extra roll … [Read more...]
